Putting up a live Christmas tree? To ensure that it doesn't dry out and become a fire hazard, remember to keep water in the stand and, ideally, mist the foliage every couple of days. On the tree and outdoors, it's also a good idea to inspect holiday string lights for signs of fraying or cracking. And finally, if you're preparing a feast in the kitchen, keep track of cooking times with a timer, always being careful to stay within earshot of the chime.

If a cooking fire starts in a pan, put a lid on it immediately and reach for the fire extinguisher you were wise to keep on hand. Meanwhile, choose candles with sturdy bases, and don't forget to keep napkins, curtains, and any other flammable materials at least a foot away from candle flames. Last: Take care when disposing of fireplace ashes. Do so in a lidded, metal ashcan, stored at a safe distance away from the foundation of the home.
